wishing for a dreamless sleep

I am a vivid dreamer and about 99% of my dreams I remember. The minute I wake up, my mind adjusts back to reality as the dream scenes comes to me in backwards. It used to be a habit, a practice that I mastered until one day and onwards, the remembering comes out naturally.

The hardest part of dreaming is feeling every bit of you is AWAKE. You feel the water rushing in your body, you feel the little waves on your feet, you feel your body explode - in slow motion - literally, your knees ache of running, you feel the weight of your body when you fly, you smell damp morning soil on your bare feet, you feel the clothes your on, you can see veins when you hold hands.

I don't mind dreaming really because it's mostly kind of amusing. But the latest morning dream I had is tormenting me. The most vivid yet, the most tragic, and the most cried out after-effect I've experienced. It was soul-draining.

With that I would like to call out to Morpheus to leave me for a while. At least let me have a good dreamless sleep tonight.

This is what I'm planning to do with MEGA. I'm going to make a cute naughty little girl-MEGA out of it bathing in ice cream. Sweet eh?

I hope I can sculp this little guy's head. Husband tells me I should just stick to what I'm comfortable (in pens and paint) and stay safe. But I don't want to. Even if it's scary just thinking about the process - the mess and big oops that could happen especially that this is my first time to customize a vinyl designer toy - it draws me even more to explore new techniques and level up for the challenge. The first challenge though is getting that Magic Sculp!

I'm also going to sew her a onesie or jammies recycling my boys' baby clothes. Oh I can't wait!

Today, I saw him at MinD Arts Festival in a glass box, silently keeping it's awesomeness yet. I can only dream of holding him sooner. I have been sleepless, endlessly imagining what I could possibly do to make him unique and definitely "my creation". I thought of crazy wardrobes, sketching here and there, constant research. But then all I can do is wait. I hope when he comes I'd be as ready as ever.

I don't care if the story or plot or characters are predictable. I simply enjoyed it in yummy 3D nonetheless.

Besides being so delighted with all the wonders of the Underland and the madness of the creatures, I am most stunned with the on-the-spot haute couture that Alice wore. She changed outfits 5 times! Her fragile pale structure made it more appealing - not that I prefer skinny and pale - I just think she's the right character for it.

I empathize for the grown up Alice beause I dream in full color every night like a delusional maniac too. Having said that, yes, I remember every bit of details of each dream. Except that I can't see my dream people in real life - thank God! I talk to them, make them understand they're not real and that they are just in my dream which of course made them more confused and once it even made the "Dream Queen" so upset that she ordered unimaginable chaos because I wasn't suppose to tell them that truth. I had been their enemy for weeks! But as Alice says "It's only a dream. Nothing can hurt me."

I can also dare things when dreaming, make bolder acts even if it means death. I mostly do heroic stunts because I know that nothing can hurt me because it's my dream and I can control it and I can always choose to wake up. I used to have a dream journal but... Maybe I should start one again.

Creative Mission

I wonder what my Creative Mission is. What can I do creatively to make this world a better place? Sounds like a line from a song but that's been the question that's singing in my head every night before I go to bed. *Gosh it even rhymes.

I need to somehow connect the dots (projects, collaborations, etc.) and create a pattern of self-conciousness that would lead to a more meaningful end-product. Flashback to graduating from college I always knew I wanted to be part of a big advertising agency and make super ads that could move people and well, generally sell. But then, advertising seemed more like a show rather than the truth these days. Or maybe I haven't been into that side of the fence anymore.

My greater mission should be more than just being a good mother to my boys and a good wife to my one and only. I must do more so that when I die, I turn back into a faerie who smiles with pride from heaven.

So I have been surfing wedding blogs more than usual these days because my fabfriend Fyns is getting married - for the second round - and being the faerie that I am, I am helping her hunt for inspirations and ideas.

Look what I found. My jaw dropped.

And in an instant, I remember my wedding (2004) bouquet: it wasn't what I had in mind. The florist had her way and made it into a gigantic ball bouquet. I remember how devasted I was. All we can do is take out the first outer row of roses to make it at least 10% lighter. It was very heavy. I didn't want to hold it.

Love letter paper bouquet! It would've been PERFECT for me, for us! Because my little love story started with letters - yes even if we were only 3 chairs away from eachother. Crazy silly people inlove! Why haven't I think of that before!? Oh I know because I was worried about the little girls' fairy wings, and hand painted flower on my flowerfriends' dresses, and a lot of other things! But you know, the magic of true love couldn't get a lousy bouquet ruin the weddign day eh?

Ok so I've made 7 sets in a row yesterday. Scary. It was a smooth-sailing shopping - all the great finds were showing up on my face and really all I can do is just make a story out of them.

Once upon a time, there were seven sisters getting all the pretty things in fashion. One day, the stylefaerie came to visit to play.

1. Sweet Grunge in July is heading off to a wedding. She is not afraid to mix the sweet and the edgy. Wearing her favourite boots on a pale blue vintage dress, she is the coolest bridesmaid I've seen.

I can't resist it, I had to put on my husband's Mr. Lennon shirt. I love the print details and how easy it felt on my body. I just returned from home for my mama's-short-and-early-night-time-off feeling lucky. I would've not worn this oversized shirt in public if it isn't for the face.

So how do you wear your boyfriend's/husband's shirt? Wear it like it's yours! Pair it with tights, or skinny jeans, or shorts... even wrap it around with a belt. Black tights, brown boots and jacket are on with mine. Not bad at all.

I ran across Adeline tonight from her LOOKBOOK who rocks her oversized shirt in her black leggings and suede wedges. Beautiful.

I spotted two more shirts from my husband's closet. Haha you know what that means! :)

Sense of Sight : Photography Exhibition

Last month, I got a call from a friend asking me if I do modeling job. Are you kidding me?? I thought it he was just making a funny hi-hello-kumusta intro and maybe just looking for a design-related help. Apparently he was serious: He was looking for a 16-year old female for his photography project. This has got to be a joke.

Of course I couldn't say yes. I mean I would put shame to his project if I would look my age and the fact that I was lying about my age might get me into trouble!

I soon found out that this is going to be for an exhibition/competition for Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai and Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre (DUCTAC) to support and creatively challenge local artistic talent and to promote the importance of regular eye screening.

Pretty cool eh? SENSE OF SIGHT as it is called.

And so Kahlil gave me his vision:

"To go about this, I'd have a loose narrative about a woman in her thirties who creates a photo album about her older sister's life spanning 20 years. To create these pictures in her mind, she will have to rely on her memories about her sister and how the world looked like when she was still able to see. In effect, the sister will have grown up from teenager to adult without looking any older than how the woman remembers her. Also, the world will become more and more colorful as the years pass on as the woman's memories fail her and her imagination fill in the gaps."

With that idea, I just had to do it. It was clever and I can imagine the creativity unfolding. Besides, I then realized, it wasn't really about me being 16 years old and deceiving the viewers - it was me being part of something unique and exciting.

The session was easy. Well you know, I didn't wear any makeup and my hair's not in it's proper manners - so it looks like I'm very raw. We finished shooting within two saturdays and I sure hope I pulled it altogether. I hope the photographer, one of my most admired shutterbugs, did not regret in taking me. It was all fun and all good having friends come over our home.

Lastly, I hope he wins! Go Kahlil!

the potpourri happiness

I had a hard time choosing which pack to go with. The color palette is as important as the scent you know. I would've chosen the turquoise blend but the scent was too much. And I would've loved the vanilla smelling goodness but it was too bland to look at. We finally settled for "Powder Fresh" Potpourri by Colony. The bathroom smells heavenly.

I love potpourris because of their texture and how they make me feel like I picked them up in the woods myself. I just love the way they turn out rotten, dry, beautiful. This makes me remember our little thank you giveaway from our wedding 2006 - a little basketfull of potpourri.

I've always wanted to do an Alphabet sort of project. I thought about an alphabet bunting, a handmade alphabet book, and alphabet pillows. But then yesterday, I started doodling. Now I thought about making an Alphabet botanical-biomorphic patterns (imaginary and real) kind of doodle project. I'm not sure what to do with them yet - but right now I can imagine putting them into canvas prints and make pillow cases! Or I can have them printed on badges... Or I can print them on tote bags!

Ok friends, now wish me the abundance of creativity and imagination to finish it all the way up to Z before 2010 ends.

I miss my sewing kit, I miss marveling at my fabrics, I miss staring at and smelling my paper collection, i terribly miss my kuti-kuti box. *Sigh.

My favorite projects:

I made this for my eldest son when he first joined a playgroup. It was his plain painting apron and I wanted to personalize it.

I made this for Akii on his Christening Day. I bought a plain swaddling blanket and customized it with his name on it. It just fits him perfectly...

My very first attempt to sew a baby bootie by hand. Imperfect, humble, raw, sewn with love. It's funny and akward but I'm proud of it's courage. It's only a left bootie because I decided I need to make one that's at least worthy of my little baby before I do a pair. Sadly until now, I couldn't find time to do it again.

With no pattern or sample in hand, I only had to take advantage of my imagination. Using a BeeSquare fabric and from my cut-off shorts left over, a recycled velcro from my mom's bag (thanks momi and sorry!) this little baby came to life.

I know these are not much of a sewing grand parade, but I am enjoying every second of creating them. And tonight is just one of those nights I wished I had my tools.

This has been on my "home inspiration" folder for 3 years now. I am so in love with this bean bag hammock by Le Beanock, I cannot stop staring and dreaming of having one. I am definitely not leaving this one out of the list (hoping budget approves) when we finally build our very home in Cebu. I can totally picture us with our late night movie marathons in this comfy super-duyan.

I am so enviously happy to see this photo! My two loveliest bestfriends hang out for a day and I'm missing them terribly. I acted as their common friend who realizes the wind faerie Bevlee and the best-buddy-since-high-school Fyns (publicly known as Jhoe or Ruki by bevlee) have more than one passion in common and they're both hyper souls. By that, I know they'd be super friends. Who says only opposites attract?

Fyns and Bevlee find themselves building friendship through Paw Love, bicycle love, travel logs, photography and me (You guys talked about how you missed me right??). And I can only wait to spend sunny days with them. Love you ninyo!

Trip to Pandora with 3D glasses on

One day, husband says I should take a break and go watch a movie. But not just in an ordinary big screen, he wants me to experience Avatar in 3D. At first I was hesitant and joked shopping (or sleeping) sounds more inviting. He told me if I miss this one out, I would regret it for the rest of my life. Yes we are movie junkies. 3 movies in one day was normal for us or arriving home by 3am while I was pregnant. When the boys came, the habit became minimal and so we turn to the mighty Vuze.

I had to take this opportunity. Well, you know we're taking turns.

Right as I put the on the 3D glasses, I can hear me say "hala...." marveling while Alice In Wonderland trailer unfolds. (But I so hated that cheshire cat grinning right up to my face. It looks evil!) It takes a bit of getting used to. As my eyes adjust, my mind flies away to Pandora.

I can almost touch that bioluminescent airborne jellyfish! It's like 5 inches near me! I thought it can even be one of my "ten tickles" kind of creature. I felt I've known this place, or dreamt it with me hovering in space. Amazing.

The film made me think how beautiful our planet would've been if technology never came or civilizations were contented. We could've harmoniously connect with the elements and all other creatures and money wouldn't have ruled us. But then again, you know humans can never be satisfied by just actually living...

As I walk out of the cinema my eyes were literally adjusting back to reality. I miss my boys already.

old for the new!

My first post for Twenty Ten. I love saying twenty-ten! It sounds promising. It feels right.

It was the craziest end-of-the-year adventure for our family. We've shifted to a new place - (bigger play, sleep, munching spaces for the boys) so that means we had a lot of packing and unpacking to do. Organizing: scissors, crayons, laundry basket, shoe racks... the list goes on! And since our new home is fully furnished, we had a hard time disposing or giving away our bed, couch, dining set even up to now. Anyone want an extra bed??

The outfit doesn't really say anything "new". But this is what I wore on new year's day - I just had to record it. This is my comfy facing-the-new-year getup - ready for the big mess, for my boys bedtime gitikanay, for welcoming twentyten simply. It's a style I'm going to wear throughout 2010: old for the new. 2009 had moments of big expectations yet accepting my worth in the end.

Dpict Illustration Exhibition : the opening

The opening starts at 7 but so far, the hall seems to be quiet. Suddenly I wished my friends in cebu were here, it would've been warmer and all fun.

I have brought my journals and postcards for sale from papersandtschai. They look happy. Oops. They're upside down! Wait let's fix this... and I need to put my iamgovinda cards.

Finally, Erik arrives. We had all the time looking at each piece of work, realizing that some are quite humorous, some are innovative, but most of them are really amazing. I'm going to do a separate post about them.

After two years of chasing each other's schedule, we finally meet again!!! I was so thrilled to see Chichux last night. I hugged her like crazy. Nothing has changed really - I'm still gamay and she's still slim as ever. Well ok except for one thing: she already has the coolest tattoo on her left foot.

I met some monkeys. Not in a racist way of saying it, I really did, they say they're the Brown Monkeys. They're really nice and typical pinoy-funny. They say I might join them soon. Well I can't wait to be a brown monkey! :)

We were getting hungry so we head out to the foodcourt to grab a pizza, spaghetti, burgers and fries. I'm so lucky to have these guys in Dubai! We hang out and had good laughs. Until I got a call from the exhibit. Ooops. Am I not suppose to eat yet?

When I got back, I met my husband's office mates and they were all very kind to me. I was glad to finally meet and have a quick chat with them. I had to make a tiny bit of doodle to complete the night then I'm home.

All in all, it was an interesting night. I met awesome people, finally get to meet my husband's friends, and made some people wonder at my works.

After 3 mix and matches I finally settled for this one. But in reality, the H&M kids vest had to go as the husband commented "ayaw pag costume Tambol." He meant to take off the vest because I look like I'm about to ride a horse. It was actually kind of cute, for him to say it politely and honestly agree that I already look good without it.

Costumes are unnecessary for a happy family day.

STYLE GUIDE: build a portfolYOU!

Portfolyou sounds really funny, I know! But it's true, your portfolio is branding YOU online. So it's important that you get the message out there: Who you are and what you do best.
I am in the middle of remodeling my portfolio website again. If I get it all done, it's my 10th design since 2004. I am easily displeased, not because I have done it bad. It's just being the typical me squeezing in a healthy creative exercise, recreating a fresher and straight-to-the-dot navigation, even if I just uploaded a "new" look last month. Or maybe I'm just really *yawn* with my current website.

I made a short guideline in building your portfolyou websites:

✔ Showcase. Only those that are worthy. Do not put anything half-baked. Yes, even if that means showing only three print ads. Show them what you are made of!

✔ Easy driving. No one likes a complicated navigation. It may be fun the first time, but when you feel that it's beginning to annoy you, scrape it all up and start from scratch. Take it easy. Remember: the simpler, the cooler.

why we love EISLEY.

I first heard of Eisley around 2003-ish through Erik. I was instantly hooked - from their website to their fashion statement and of course their music. "Golly Sandra" was sooo inviting and a happy song that it became my first Eisley favourite song. When I had my first son, at 4 months old on his first solid meal day, I played "Golly Sandra" and he was all smiles and mess. From then on, we never missed a day without singing their melodies. Believe me it's not an exageration, everyday is Eisley day.

At some days, the husband gets the guitar, looks up for the tabs on the net, and all three of us sing their songs while our 1yo claps in admiration. It's pretty awesome how my first son (now 3yo) can actually sing their songs by heart. Well what do you expect? He's been listening to their music since he was still a wormy inside my tummy!

Personally (well yes, husband included) and plainly speaking, I love them because (1) they don't sound like any other band I've heard - maybe because the sisters' pitch perfect voices made them uniquely...them. (2) I love their music because it's so melodic and the soundscape feels like diving into a deep forest with the faeries and all other forest creatures. Their mystery isn't scary-evil, but a magical-good one. (3) And the songwriting is aaaaahhhmazing.

Coldplay and Eisley together. I can only imagine. Sadly-funny though, you can't pair them with my husband's favourite band, Rammstein. That would be a disaster!

Before we die, we'd love to see Eisley play live. Maybe one day, when my boys get a bit older like in their teens. That would be a magical night for us. I wish for Eisley to last forever.

DPICT Illustration Exhibition

One of the best things in being petite: you get to wear items in the teens or kids section thus making you pay less!

I was torn between the black suede rouched boot and the flat heeled brown boot of new look. The black one slipped perfectly on me. It was smooth and it felt very comfortable even with a little bit of heel. But I wasn't sure if it was really practical - you know having two boy huggers running around. So I fell inlove with that brown thing. So inlove that I just had to play dress up for 5 minutes.

Ten Tickles in Watercolour, Pen and Ink

I decided to have it on a big watercolour board. (Sorry for the term "big". I still have to find that ruler!) My excitement was just too immense than my fear of a blank canvas that's almost taller than me.

After having laid every tickley creature for a week, the final and most delicate step was to work with ink to get that "perfect" splatter across the whole artwork. It was crazy-scary that my husband had to remind me not to get carried away.

This is "ten tickles" in watercolour, pen and ink all set for framing for my upcoming DUCTAC exhibit, "Dpict". I am fairly satisfied and overjoyed with the final output. It seems I like it better in paper than in digital. Maybe because it offers more risks and thrills and you can never rely on that magical cmd+Z. Looks like I might get a new - old - habit back.

The theme of my Fall 2009 collection was Paris at the turn of the century. The Belle Epoche ("The Beautiful Era") was the period of the European social history that began at the ned of the 19th century and lasted up until World War I... as artists and writers looked back wistfully at the romance of a fading world about to disappear, and rapidly hurling into an unknown future that they would eventually refer to as "Modern".

I love the rich dark colours in plums and violets and ultramarine in a riot of print. Sui used velvet, chiffon and silk to compound the feeling of opulence and variety. If I could wear one of her creations, I'd probably pick the center of the last group. Which one is your favourite?

My works have been reviewed and will be included in the upcoming exhibit of the Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre (DUCTAC) called "Dpict" on 16th December. It's such an honor and I can't wait!

My plan is to convert my digital works "ten tickles" (almost done. will post soon.) and "scent keeping" (see photo below) into paper, and add one new artwork to my line up. Sadly though, I can't push through with acrylic painting on wood for "imaginary friends" as I run out of time :(

It's not a digital exhibit so I was really excited to get my hands dirty again after 5years. For the two artworks, I played with watercolour, pen and ink. For my third entry, it's purely pen. My hands found a new doodle-love technique (see photo detail below). I think it produced quite an outstanding effect.

Next step is to get all three artworks framed and delivered on the 1st. Giddyhappy me :)

We've been featured! My (favourite) Art Appreciation college professor has written an article about our works and how GIRLALOO rocks like Wonder Girls. (Awww, shucks.) I am tremendously honoured and inspired to create more "bimorphic forms" of art.

Art's girl power
by Radel Paredes, Cebu Daily News - Life! (November 17, 2009)

THEY are the local art world's equivalent to the Wonder Girls, making digital illustrations that (clap, clap) nobody, nobody can top. Not even the boys in the trade. Girlaloo, the all-girl group of illustrators, hopes to dissolve the digital divide and the gender gap in their first, self-titled exhibit.

Consisting of more than 30 computer-generated or digitally enhanced drawings, the show opened Nov.9 at the lobby of the University of San Carlos College of Architecture and Fine Arts building.

Most members were USC fine arts alumnae, so choosing to launch the exhibit tour in their alma mater is a gesture of homecoming. From USC, the works will be shown in the University of the Philippines Cebu Campus and the Benedicto College.

Targeting the the art school set is deliberate as the group aims not only to promote digital illustration as an "exciting outlet of expression and voice" but also to encourage other girls to consider it as a serious career option.

The artists thus flirt tipping the balance, making even the most macho digital art geek succumb to girl power.

And how diverse are the ways in which this power projects. There's the flotsam of bimorphic forms and cartoon monsters in the doodles of Govinda Trazo and Tambolbee Villarino.

There's also the strange digital and pop version of Art Nouveau in the portraits of women by Richelle Chua and Narki Hormiguera. Kristy Anne Ligones, on the other hand, is not as keen at the irony of simulating organic forms with a computer. Her own depiction of a woman combines the cute and the grotesque.

A mix of Mary Poppins and Yellow Submarine is hinted in the work of Kristine Oplando, while blinking stars and planets add cosmic aura to February Anne Ybanez's drawings of children. Childhood fantasy is revisited by Johanna Velasco-Deutsch, Luisa Gonzaga, and Madeth Villarosa. But rather than imagine a world of happy endings, the girls opted to portray a gloomy fairy tale.

Indeed the artists of Girlaloo have come of age. And despite the common fascination with the kikay, the kinky and the kitschy, they have proven that their works can still solicit serious reflection. Or, that high tech doodle, can be high art, too.

The Wedding

I've done a lot of Halloween getups before but this one is the scariest I've done yet. Remembering Halloween '06 from my old office, Xlibris. Our department had come up with a spine-chilling idea. We created "The Wedding" - an unforgiving bloody story where one wedding turned into a masacre.

We all had a great time that day. I did their makeup and used poster colour to get some fake wounds and cuts. Even our boss didn't mind us looking like a dead corpse.

I was the little flower girl - complete with dead flowers in a basket and dollies.

The bride was my favourite. Classic horror bride.

Fancy the halloween? My husband as a Security Guard 5 years ago. Tomorrow, my 3.3yo will have his first trick or treat in school as a Policeman. Maybe two years from now, the Baby Manghud can be a Military General! Oh yeah, mother feels so safe around her boys.

There were other options for him but they would never work. He can be a WWE Wrestler with my black tights and his black shoes wearing nothing on top, if only he'd wear the mask like Rey Mysterio and his Championship Belt. He can also be a ghost as my mom suggested but I just couldnt find a white cloth that could fit his entire body. Oh well, his costume turned out pretty cool for him anyway. I hope he enjoys his day tomorrow as a Policeman.

Tell us about your girls.
My dolls are called Blythes. They’re highly collectible dolls that a company in Japan called CWC and Takara manufactures every month with different styles and themes.

What's your girls' signature style?
I really gravitate to the woodsy-woodland type look. I always imagine them to be mushroom gatherers rather than urbanite divas. I also like doing whimsy Tim Burton-ish type of clothing but I really have to smoke corset making.

I am most fascinated with your Twin Outfits project. Are they becoming you or you becoming them?Definitely not the latter. Haha! I have favorite outfits that I wish I could wear everyday so I copy them or get inspiration from them for Blythe dresses. The girls can then wear them till I get tired looking a the same ol’ outfit.

Do you prefer shopping or creating for their clothes?
A little bit of shopping but I want to try as much as I can to make them. It’s an artists’ pride thing. If there are clothes out there that I think I can’t make with my amateur seamstress hands and they really wow me over, I’d buy them as long as they’re not over $30. If they’re worth more than that then I try to inspire myself to make an outfit that would be worth more than my imposed Blythe wardrobe budget. I buy shoes though because I can’t make those. I actually have more Blythe shoes than dresses!

What's the biggest challenge in customizing their outfit?
For me everything looks good on a sketch because my sketches are pretty detailed but when the design is interpreted on fabric, it doesn’t look as stellar. I don’t know how I manage to do that every time. It gets debased as a finished product. Also, puff sleeves, I’ve been doing them forever and I still can’t perfect them!

Who's your favorite girl?

Ooooh this is almost like a sacrilegious query. Haha. Let’s just say that the ones that were not my favorite were the ones I adopted out. If I was asked this question at gunpoint I would have to say my petrol haired Princess a la Mode Blythe. She just seems mermaidish to me, you know me and my fascination with scaly maidens...

I heard they're insanely expensive. How does your purse feel about that?
My purse or my husband? Hehe. They are somewhat pricey but it kind of helps to know that they have excellent resale value. I have a doll worth $ in the secondary market. It’s pretty much like owning jewelry, you own them for the prestige of owning something that has an excellent value. I am justifying. If I ever quit this Blythe mania, I can always sell them and not lose any money. Also, I make and sell dresses, I’ve bought girls with the money I make from my guerilla dress shop.

Do you plan to buy more dolls? Who's next in line?
I choose my girls according to hair color. The stock clothes come in second but not really a priority since stock clothes don’t stay on the girls for too long. I let go of a bright yellow haired Blythe to get the shocking pink haired one that I’ve always wanted. I want a blonde and a mossy green haired Blythe. Still waiting for CWC/Takara to come up with her.

So is it an addiction or a kind of lifestyle?
I would say it is more of an addiction than a lifestyle. My life doesn’t really revolve around my Blythes since I collect other things as well but Blythes fuel my creativity when I’m at home. With my other vintage toys, they’re just shelf denizens.

Lastly, why blythe dolls? and not barbie dolls or ball jointed dolls?
Blythes seems to have an ambiguity when it comes to age. Unlike Barbies or Momokos which look like adult women, Blythes can get away wearing childish frocks or lavish ballgowns. And then there’s that whole big head big eyes Japanime fascination that never seems to leave my psyche.

STYLE GUIDE: find your own illustration style.

I think it's important to maintain a certain style to your illustration no matter what the trends are out there. It took me more than 10 years to finally find (and accept) my signature style and I am still facing the challenge of truly putting it to the fullest. Here are my thoughts on finding your own style in your illustrations.

✔ Know your strengths and take them higher than your expectations. Super realistic figure drawings? An eye for details? Textured experiments? Focus and get to work.

✔ Speak up! Having a big idea behind your illustration makes better storyteller in you. And when you have a story to tell or a thought to share, you get to imagine how you would share it. Your tone makes it uniquely your own.

✔ Surprise! If you surprise yourself with your process, that's a good start. If you're satisfied with the end result, make room for more surprises next time.

✔ Don't get too inspired. Inspiration becomes deadly when it grows with you that you start to imitate (maybe unconciously) exactly that which got you inspired.

✔ Review review review. Review your work over and over and see if it doesn't "look like somebody's".

✔ Stick to YOUR style. But let them grow in maturity - not in numbers or popularity.

I just realized that I am old. Old but not tired. Just old. I don't know if that's alright. It's amazing how time swirls like a huge chunk of vortex vacuum that if you make that one wrong move, everything falls apart. Mr. Time used to exist in my little reality. But now, I can't even remember how I made him up.

Maybe it has something to do with my stagnant music taste. Or maybe because I'm harder to please these days - when I look at a layout design or a punky funky website it seems easier for me to be the unkind critic. describe your everyday getup - say, going to the office?
First of all, I never go out in the house without makeup on or at least a defined eyes. Like I said, everything would depend on my mood but one thing is for sure, I never go to the office or anywhere with just a plain shirt and pants. Sometimes I go to the office as if im on my way to a party or a photo shoot or a costume party! Hahahahaha

do you believe in trends? do you create or follow one?
Yeah sure! It's important to be aware of what's the latest in fashion or anything for that matter. Yes i am a follower but I make sure to put the signature me in whatever trend i follow.

and what's your kind of signature?
Hmmmm... I'm not sure, I should really ask the people who always see me in my daily grinds. But I'd like to think that I have this sexy spunk signature. Hehehe

which of you is your favourite - curly or straight? your hair i mean.

I loooooooooove my curly hair! I miss it so much! but the two hairstyles represented the different eras in my life. Hahaha. I just cannot linger forever in one style, we all have to update our look and take it to another level. I'm livin' my new hair now.

do you think styling should be more than less?
more on creativeness and common sense, less on dumb choices of ensemble.

where do you shop?
I'm a pretapersonal - ukay adik! I am always drawn to that relief good smell, kung asa ang ukay, I'm there!

i find your wardrobe colorful - is that seasonal?
My wardrobe is extremely colorful! and it's never seasonal.

do you have style influences?
Japanese fashion is... impeccable! and I get easily influenced with anything or anybody, even the strangers I see on the streets or malls.

name one item that's a no-no.
White shoes if you're putot or you just simply cannot carry it with style.

how do you find yourself dressing up 20 years from now?
Still FABULOUS!!!

Who wouldn't fall inlove odosketch by Odopod? It's a brilliant idea, a very refreshing site. I had to try it, sketching using the trackpad. I can't wait to show this to my 3yo!
